






On the A-Tat Day or the Ascending Day of the Maha Thingyan Festival, people across Yangon Region are engaging in merit-making and joyfully participating in the traditional Myanmar water festival in a peaceful and respectful manner.
On this auspicious day of the 1386 Myanmar traditional calendar year, people visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, other pagodas, temples and monasteries, to perform religious activities such as observing the precepts, offering alms, releasing animals, reciting Paritta Suttas, meditating at the Meditation Centers and offering chairty food and drinks, all carried out peacefully and mindfully. Under the supervision of the Yangon Region Government, a fish releasing ceremony was held in the morning on April 16.
Chief Minister U Soe Thein, along with his wife, the Chief Justice of Regional High Court, members of the region government and their spouses, and other officials participated by releasing 5,000 fish into Kandawgyi Lake in Bahan Township as an act of merit. Furthermore, in the People's Square, various departments and donors offered charity foods, while families and groups of youths from different townships happily joined in the celebrations.
People also participated in traditional Thanaka application, showcasing the cultural practice with enthusiasm. The public also enjoyed the walking Thingyan by splashing water joyfully.
The Chief Minister and officials, and their spouses observed and supported the celebrations, and also took part by splashing water on the participants. Additionally, staff families from Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) organized a Satuditha charity foods offering in the morning.

They observed and supported the traditional Thanaka application activity, which is being promoted as part of efforts to have it recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and sprayed water using sprigs of Eugenia on the staff families as a gesture of celebration.
