In Greece on Wednesday, the supermoon was seen rising behind the columns of the ancient marble Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, south of Athens. The reddish-orange color of the super "blood" moon is the result of all the sunrises and sunsets in Earth's atmosphere projected onto the surface of the eclipsed moon. The moon was more than 220,000 miles away at its fullest. It was this proximity, combined with a full moon, that qualified it as a supermoon, making it appear slightly bigger and more brilliant in the sky. More lunar shows are coming. On Nov. 19, there will be a near total eclipse where the moon dims but doesn't turn red. The next total lunar eclipse will be May 2022. The last one was January 2019.
