Smoke continued to billow from Sakurajima volcano on Japan's southern island of Kyushu Wednesday. Dozens of people have evacuated two towns on the island since the volcano spewed ash and large rocks on Sunday night.

Japan's Meteorological Agency raised the eruption alert to the highest level of five and advised 51 residents in two towns facing the volcano to leave their homes. Sakurajima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes and has erupted repeatedly. The volcano is about 1,000 kilometers Southwest of Tokyo.
