Russian Orthodox Christians celebrated the feast of Epiphany on Tuesday, which marks the end of their 12-day Christmas period. Some took part in an Epiphany ritual where they submerged themselves in freezing water to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ.

Deep in Russia's Perm region, faithful travelled to the Ice Cave to submerge themselves in the underground waters. The site, a popular tourist destination, is said to be the only cave in the world to offer believers the chance to do so. This year's Epiphany have been overshadowed by the coronavirus. The number of visitors at the cave was limited to 40, whereas about 100 would have joined in normal times. Some Western Christian churches celebrate the religious holiday as Three Kings Day, which marks the visit of the Magi, or Three Wise Men.
