A fishing vessel has been left to disintegrate in the waters off the shores of Peru in one of the country's most highly contaminated beaches Thursday.

Local authorities say the "Ocean's Star" fishing vessel, registered to the Infinito SC corporation, has been left for scrap metal after washing ashore in rough weather, just another, although larger, piece of trash on this forsaken shoreline.

It had been anchored just 2,000 meters from shore before the grounding. The waters off the beach, located in the Callao region of Peru a few miles north of the capital, are used by local fishermen to ply their trade.

That zone is one of the most intensely used and polluted zones in the area," stated Juan Carlos Sueiro, Peru's Director of OCEANA, an international NGO dedicated to protecting the world's oceans.
