


Teachers, Professors, faculty members, representatives and international experts gather at Yangon University of Education to discuss on achieving the sustainable development goals through education on Wednesday.
Okayama University from Japan, and Yangon University of Education organized the 6th Meeting of the Asian Network to promote Teacher Education on ESD, with the support from JSPS.
Together with the experts from Japan, China, Korea, Mongolia and Indonesia, the meeting will discuss on how to promote educational sustainable development in the teacher education all over Myanmar, experts said.
Director, Okayama University (ESD Promotion Centre), Hiroki Fujii said "... Myanmar is very powerful and very active country to promote in education... There are so many students, and there are so many teachers, they are very interesting to improve the quality of education.... Through the education for sustainable development, we expect the students enhance their understanding on curriculum, system thinking and enhance their attitude towards to the environment, social issues and their environment and so on.... -Now discussing how to incorporate the ideas of the sustainability to the teacher training program in each teacher college. So then, based on their discussion, they will incorporate the details of educational programs in each subject of level in each institution…. "
Experts from the Sagaing University of Education and Yangon University of education shared the importance of education for sustainable development. And also added the positive outcomes of the meeting which will help to improve the country’s education sector.
Rector, Sagaing University of Education, Dr. Saw Myo Naing said “The meeting organizes annually and this year, we aim to discuss on education for sustainable development. Currently, Myanmar is also working on developing curriculum to improve the country’s education sector and help to advocate SDGs in the community. Through this meeting, together with international experts, we will discuss how to put in sustainable development subject, environmental related subject, gender and peace subject in students and teacher training curriculum. And how to apply it in different education level.”
Pro-Rector, Yangon University of Education, Dr. Kay Thwe Hlaing said “This meeting is really great for the country’s education sector. Through the sharing and discussion of the experts on their knowledge and experiences, we can learn how to work for sustainable development goals through improving of education sector. They have advanced teaching and learning styles. Myanmar is now changing into student center approach rather than teacher center. We do learn a lot and hope to be able to see many new projects to work together with Myanmar educational departments as well as to be able to see development in teacher educator projects more in the future.”
The meeting will continue until Thursday at Yangon University of Education.
