Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida says it's his country's duty to work toward a world without nuclear weapons. Speaking at UN headquarters in New York Monday, Kishida said: "Japan is determined to calmly uphold the NPT as its guardian."
To lead the way, Japan is scheduling several high-level meetings hoping to help build momentum toward this cause. He also called on global leaders of nuclear states to enhance transparency and to engage in dialogue. In force since 1970, the Nonproliferation Treaty known as the NPT has the widest adherence of any arms control agreement, with some 191 countries that are members.
