Thailand orders gun law overhaul after fatal shootings

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an overhaul of the country’s gun control laws following two deadly shootings in Nonthaburi province.

Authorities will halt the renewal of public firearm carry permits and introduce an amnesty for people to surrender unregistered or non-transferable guns without penalty. Police and local officials will also conduct nationwide checkpoints targeting illegal weapons and narcotics, while tougher criminal penalties will follow the amnesty period. The government is also introducing new safety measures for schools, including dedicated Rights Protection and Safety Centers. Debsirin Nonthaburi School is set to reopen on August 17, with mental health teams providing support to students and teachers.
