Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, U Min Naung, inspected the Paunglaung Dam in Zeyathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw in the evening on August 7.
The Union Minister examined the dam's structural integrity, water storage levels, and the overflow from the spillway. Officials briefed him on rainfall in the catchment area, water inflow, daily water levels, and the overflow status. In response, the Union Minister instructed the officials to systematically carry out the necessary tasks to ensure the dam's structural security, following the designated work plans.
The Paunglaung Dam has experienced spillway overflow for 18 of its 21 years of operation. The highest recorded overflow was in 2013, when water reached a height of 8.3 feet and overflowed for 118 days.
In 2024, the water reached 11.87 feet for 68 days. Currently, the water is overflowing at a height of 2.29 feet. Because the dam is at full capacity, all four turbines at the hydroelectric power plant are operating at full capacity. This also ensures a sufficient water supply for the cultivation of winter and summer crops in the dam's irrigation area. The current overflow from the spillway does not affect the dam's stability or the safety of the local area, so the public has no need to worry, it’s learnt.
