Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin's ashes scattered at sea

The ashes of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who died on November 30 at 86, were scattered at sea on Sunday.

Can Qi, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee, and other officials escorted Jiang’s widow and family onto the Chinese frigate Yangzhou - named after Jiang’s hometown - to the water of the Yangtze River.Jiang was cremated on December 5 in Beijing.

A trained engineer and former head of China’s largest city, Shanghai, Jiang was president for a decade until 2003 and led the ruling Communist Party for 13 years until 2002. He oversaw the return of Hong Kong from British rule in 1997 and Beijing’s entry into the World Trade Organisation in 2001.
