The fan-fairs marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities were held on December 3rd at the Kyansitmin Housing Training School for Intellectually Disabled Children in Hlaingthaya Township, Yangon Region and the children from the school participated joyfully in the activities.
In Myanmar, records of children with intellectual disabilities have been maintained since 2004. According to the 2014 national census, there are approximately two million people with disabilities in the country.
Col. Myo Myint (Retired), Patron, Training School for Intellectually Disabled Children, said " In the past, children with intellectual disabilities were often stigmatized, with families feeling shame and the children facing exclusion from society. However, thanks to the efforts of international organizations for individuals with intellectual disabilities, these children are now being supported through sports and activities to develop their physical and intellectual abilities, enabling them to integrate into society effectively."
On October 14, 1992, during the 47th UN General Assembly, December 3rd was designated as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Since then, commemorative events have been celebrated globally, including in Myanmar.
Daw Khin Than Nwe, Principal, Training School for Intellectually Disabled Children, said " This year, the celebrations included unique games, singing and dancing activities, painting sessions, and environmental awareness activities to assess the children's knowledge. Additionally, there were creative activities such as naming different types of traditional Myanmar snacks correctly, categorizing them, and engaging in quiz-based intellectual challenges. Games aimed at improving physical fitness were also introduced."
Furthermore, an in-house sports competition is planned for Union Day on February 12, 2025, allowing the school to evaluate the children’s progress and development similarly to an academic examination.
