Disaster Management: National Committee Held Its Meeting in Nay Pyi Taw

National Disaster Management Committee held its meeting at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement in Nay Pyi Taw on Thursday.

Chairman of the Committee, Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice Senior General Soe Win attended the meeting and discussed that in implementing the disaster management tasks, it is essential to have strong foundation, good operational work and coordianted efforts. He urged to establish the management system at different levels of township, district, region, state and union level with set policies, planning and SOPs.

He stressed the needs to review the work implementations of the respective levels and fulfilled the requirements. He pointed out that the risk of natural disaster could be reduced with the participation of people in disaster reduction efforts.

The Vice Senior General continued that the Standing Order on Natural Disaster Management (2009) was issued based on the expereiece of Nargis cyclone that struck in 2008.

The amendments have been made in line with the disaster outbreak globally, management system and changing trend of technology at present time. It focuses to make coordinated efforts among the 12 work committees, disaster management committees of the Union Territory Nay Pyi Taw, Regions and States, Tatmadaw and the Ministries.

The 2022 Standing Order on Natural Disaster Management was drafted with the opinions and remarks by the Ministry of Defence, related work committees, and disaster management committees. The Vice Senior General urged the officials from the work committees, and disaster management committees of Union Territory Nay Pyi Taw and Regions and States to scrutinize their disaster management plans to be in line with the the 2022 Standing Order.

It was followed by the round of discussions on disaster management efforts and progress of works as well as fund allotment, plans for emergency response measures, providing relief items and conducting educative tasks. The meeting also sought approval on 2022 Standing Order on Natural Disaster Management.
