Disaster Management Department under the Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement is building shelters for emergency relocation if there is any disaster.
Nilar Htun, Director, Disaster Management Department said "Natural disasters occur frequently in Myanmar; especially Ayeyarwaddy Region, Yangon Region and Rakhine State suffer cyclones the most. People need to take shelter during those disasters, and we had experienced many deaths and losses when cyclone Nargis happened. That is why we are building shelters in advance for the people to be able to relocate and take shelter. Now, there are a total of 242 shelters being constructed all over the country. Among them, 134 shelters are in Ayeyarwady Region; 117 shelters have been finished while 17 shelters are still under construction. In normal times, those shelters are being used as schools, hospitals, clinics and other administration and social affairs. When a disaster occurs, they will be used as shelters. There are 2 shelters being constructed in Dedaye Township, and our main purpose is that people can take shelter when a disaster occurs."
It is learnt that 117 shelters constructed in Ayeyarwaddy Region are being used as schools in normal times, and will be used as shelters when a disaster occurs.
