A coordination meeting on enhancing the education and health sectors was held on January 14 at the Chairman’s the Office of the National Defence and Security Council. Acting President Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, attended and delivered an address.
In his opening remarks, the Acting President stated that the Government is continuously undertaking efforts to improve education standards. In doing so, while coordinating with relevant ministries to enhance the professional qualifications of teachers currently teaching in basic education schools, it has been observed that there is a significant need for a larger number of teaching staff in basic education.
It has also been found necessary to upgrade teacher training schools and education degree colleges to university level in order to award postgraduate degrees to teaching staff. In this regard, the Acting President called for collective discussions on whether the designation “Teacher Training University” would be appropriate and effective.
With regard to basic education schools, he noted that while some schools meet the required standards, others lack complete school facilities. In line with the evolving teaching systems and increasing numbers of students, basic education schools that meet standard criteria must be systematically upgraded in a neat and orderly manner in accordance with prescribed specifications.
He further stated that at the high school level, not only vocational subjects but also, at the middle school level, basic knowledge in industrial, agricultural, and livestock-related fields is being planned for inclusion in the curriculum. Through such instruction, a substantial pool of human resources needed for the nation will be developed.
To support improvements in the health sector, he emphasized the need to upgrade and open nursing schools in respective regions and states. He noted that nurses are assigned duties according to their levels in hospitals, and that assignments differ depending on the number of hospital beds.
Therefore, he stressed the need to classify grades according to responsibilities and to increase benefits in line with those grades. Subsequently, the attendees discussed the successful establishment and operation of basic education schools focusing on industry, agriculture, and livestock, as well as ongoing arrangements to open region-specific vocational training courses for youth who did not pass the matriculation examination.
They also discussed how opening teacher training universities has contributed to strengthening the national education sector, and how curricula for industrial, agricultural, and livestock subjects could be further improved through coordinated efforts by relevant ministries.
They further presented discussions on the current status of producing nursing personnel through nursing training schools and midwifery training schools in order to enhance the health sector. In response to the presentations, the Acting President provided necessary guidance and instructions.
