






A ceremony to mark 2023 World Population Day was observed at the MICC-2 in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday with an address by Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice Senior General Soe Win.
In his address, the Vice Senior General said that with the aim to pay attention to the population problems that must be urgently solved in the world and comprehensive development programs for all human beings, the United Nations has designated July 11, 1987 when the world's population reached five billion, as the World Population Day and held commemorative ceremonies on 11th July every year.
The celebration is held to improve the quality of life for all human beings to be healthy and strong, the importance of reproductive health for the establishment of a prosperous new society, gender equality, poverty and maternal and child health and to know widely information on domestic and foreign population and growth.
Being a member of United Nations, Myanmar has observed annually the world population day celebrations since 1990 and it is 34 times.
On 15th November 2022, the United Nations announced that the world's population reached 8 billion people.With the rapid growth of the world's population, inequality, widening gap between rich and poor, lack of food are faced in most of the nations and the numbers of people suffering from the risks of natural disasters caused by the water scarcity and climate change have increased.
That’s why, the United Nations has adopted 17 "Sustainable Development Goals" with 169 targets to end poverty, to protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of all people.
The UN member countries have agreed to meet the goals by 2030. In implementing the SDGs, Myanmar is making emphasis on harmonious development in social, economic and environmental conservation sectors, poverty reduction, women empowerment and gender equality.
If viewing the population growth of Myanmar, the country population has reached more than 55.7 million on 1st October 2022 according to the estimated population based on the 2014 census data. It is estimated that there will be more than 59.3 million by 2030.
The Vice Senior General added that, currently, Myanmar needs to use effectively the strength of women through the power of young people in the nation’s development plans.
In the future, the elderly population will increase and so it must be prepared in advance to strengthen the social protection system and create decent job opportunities for the elders. He also stressed the needs on ensuring gender equality and promoting the rights of women and young women, decreasing maternal deaths and reproductive health care activities.
He reiterated that a pilot census will be conducted in Myanmar in October 2023 as a preliminary test for the nationwide census which must be conducted every 10 years in order to take advantage of the demographic change in the country and the nationwide population and housing census will be conducted from 1st to 15th October 2024.
Only when the important population facts and the correct numbers are listed, opportunities will be created for all round development of the nation and he also called for participating in 2023 pilot census and 2024 population and housing enumerating programs.
Later, Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing reported on population changing process of Myanmar and policy recommendation. After that, a video clip on 2024 Population and Housing Census education was shown.
