High above Sydney's beaches, drones are being deployed to monitor for sharks, one of the world's deadliest predators.

Australia's oceans are teaming with the animals and authorities are adopting a multi-layered approach to keeping people safe. It includes not just drones, but also shark trackers and bite-resistant wetsuits. Such swimwear may reduce injuries and blood loss, the most common cause of death from shark bite, according to research by Flinders University.

When a shark killed surfer Mercury Psillakis off a northern Sydney beach in September, his grief-stricken family called it "a tragic and unavoidable accident". More than 1,280 shark incidents have been recorded around Australia since 1791 -- about 260 of them fatal -- according to a national database.
