The International Council On Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) will make a field visit in Mrauk-U around September and October of this year. ICMOS is a global non-government organization associated with UNESCO and that works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places around the world.
Myanmar submitted its first draft proposal for Mrauk-U to become a World Heritage Site in September 2019. The final proposal seeking to designate Mrauk-U as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was submitted on 30th December 2021, to the World Heritage Committee in Paris, according to the Department of Archeology and National Museum.
KyiKhin, Director, Dept. of Archeology & National Museum said “In Myanmar, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra were listed as World Heritage Sites in 2014, and the Bagan Archaeological zone was inscribed on the list in 2019. This time, we submitted the proposal for Mrauk-U to become the World Heritage site.”
The old places, city walls, forts, moats and religious edifices, temples and stupas built by ancient Kings are well-known for Mrauk-U as the ancient city.
KyiKhin, Director, Dept. of Archeology & National Museum said “If Mrauk-U is inscribed on the World Heritage list, Myanmar has a good reputation. It will attract more tourists not only from local but also from abroad. Also, our government will get more income from it. As we are doing maintenance tasks there with the international standard, we will gain technical knowledge and support too. It will provide for the economic progress of the locals.”
ICOMOS will also meet with the Rakhine State Government, Mrauk-U District Administrative Body and local people during the field trip. If Mrauk-U is described on the World Heritage list, the region’s economy, transportation, social and tourism sectors will develop.
