The Bago Region Committee on the Elimination of Child Labour held a coordination meeting on October 23.
Speaking at the meeting, Chief Minister U Myo Swe Win stressed the importance of ensuring all school-age children have access to education and improving school attendance and grade-to-grade progression.
He said that children aged 14 to 16 who are working must be allowed to work only the legally permitted four hours a day, with opportunities to attend non-formal education programmes or vocational training during their remaining time.
He also highlighted the need to create job opportunities for parents, raise public awareness of child labour laws in both urban and rural areas, and strengthen cooperation among government departments, NGOs, INGOs, social organizations and local administrators.
Committee members presented reports on child labour prevention measures in their respective sectors. Regional ministers also provided recommendations, and the Chief Minister gave instructions on implementing the necessary measures to protect children’s rights and eliminate child labour.
