The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has stepped up chlorination of the city’s water supply to protect public health and prevent diarrhea diseases.

The intensified campaign began on 12 August, with chlorine being added to water pipelines serving selected townships to kill harmful bacteria and other waterborne pathogens.

Officials said the disinfectant is being added in controlled amounts. Residents may notice an unusual smell because regular chlorination has not been carried out. Chlorine is a WHO-approved disinfectant widely used to make drinking water safer. YCDC said the measures are aimed at ensuring residents have access to clean and safe water.
