The Ministry of Electricity and Energy will offer lower electricity rates to large industries in Yangon that shift their power use from daytime to night.
Under the new plan, eligible industries will pay 600 kyats per unit, down from the regular 900 kyats, for electricity used between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The ministry said the move aims to reduce pressure on the power grid during peak daytime hours and allow more electricity to be supplied to the public. The scheme is being introduced first for large electricity users in Yangon. It is also expected to help industries reduce production costs while making better use of hydropower during the rainy season.
