Kidney Transplant Surgeries: kidney transplant surgeries in NPTGH carried out

Domestically, kidney transplant surgeries are being regularly performed. The sixth and seventh kidney transplant surgeries were carried out at Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1000-bed) on August 5 and 6, 2026.

The Union Minister for Health, Professor Dr. Thet Khaing Win, accompanied by the Deputy Minister and Directors-General, visited the patients who had undergone kidney transplants and were receiving intensive care in the ICU on the morning of August 11. He encouraged them with words of support, addressed the necessary requirements based on the reports presented by the Hospital Superintendent and Professors/Senior Specialist Physicians regarding the status of the kidney transplant surgeries and the patients' health conditions, and instructed that kidney transplant operations continue to be carried out without losing momentum.

The sixth kidney transplant surgery was performed on a 44-year-old male kidney patient from Hpa-an, Kayin State, and a 28-year-old female kidney donor from Ahphyauk Village, Kawhmu Township, Yangon Region. The total surgery time was 5 hours and 25 minutes. The seventh kidney transplant surgery was performed on a 29-year-old female assistant primary school teacher, a kidney patient from Ngapyayma Village, Thanlyin Township, Yangon Region, and her 24-year-old sister, who served as the kidney donor.

The total surgery time was 5 hours and 39 minutes. The post-operative health conditions of the four individuals including the two patients and the two kidney donors from the sixth and seventh transplant surgeries are reported to be good. They are being kept in the intensive care unit and continue to receive necessary care from specialist professors/senior physicians in relevant fields and skilled nurses.

In Myanmar, kidney transplant treatments are being performed at central-level hospitals under the Ministry of Health, Tatmadaw hospitals, and private hospitals in Yangon and Mandalay. Under the Ministry of Health, they are regularly conducted at the Specialty Hospital (500-bed), Yangon, and Mandalay General Hospital. Additionally, Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1000-bed) was able to commence these procedures in December 2024 with its first transplant and has now successfully performed up to seven surgeries, including the two patients mentioned above, it’s reported.
