Riverbank Protection Works: MOALI DM inspected riverbank protection works

The Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems is undertaking arrangements to carry out riverbank protection works, dredging of silt and sand from sedimentation areas, and channel-cutting works along the Ngawun River, as well as the construction of spur dykes and diversion dykes where necessary.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Bo Bo Kyaw, accompanied by officials, inspected the progress of these works on July 10. The Deputy Minister and officials inspected the condition of the Ngawun embankment between embankment mileposts 11/1 and 11/3 near Ale Su Village in Hinthada Township; between mileposts 20/4 and 20/5 near Yay Le Village in Laymyethna Township; between mileposts 23/0 and 24/0 near Nyaungbinwe Village; and between mileposts 24/1 and 24/3 near Kyaung Su Village.

They also inspected erosion and bank collapse along the Ngawun River, the formation of sandbanks, and the construction of bamboo rafts using floating units to place sandbags and tree branches near Htein Ngu Village. In addition, a section of the Ngawun embankment at milepost 25/3 in Laymyethna Township had experienced a lowering of the embankment.

They inspected ongoing measures to reduce water erosion, including placing Geo-Bags, constructing diversion barriers with Geo-Bags, and protecting the water-facing slope of the embankment and adjoining areas against erosion using geotextile sheets and Geo-Bags. They also inspected the driving of steel sheet piles to further block and prevent the deep-water flow channel, as well as the ongoing placement of large Geo-Bags using sand-pumping vessels and other watercraft, it’s reported.
