Energy transition threatens Dutch village Moerdijk

Residents of Moerdijk, a Dutch village of about 1,150 people, face the possible loss of their homes as authorities consider expanding clean-energy and industrial infrastructure around the community.

The village, located between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, is considered strategically important for the Netherlands' energy transition. Under the largest proposal, Moerdijk could effectively disappear.

A smaller alternative would allow the village to remain but leave it surrounded by energy facilities, the port and a highway. Residents say uncertainty over the plans is already prompting some families to leave, while authorities have yet to provide clear details on the project's final size, impact and compensation.
