Egypt reopened its embassy in the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Saturday, ending a 12-year closure that began in 2014 due to security conflicts in the country.

The move signals a rapprochement and improved relations with western Libya’s UN-recognized Government of National Unity led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh. Egypt closed its embassy in Tripoli in 2014 when heavy fighting split Libya into rival eastern and western administrations following the 2011 uprising.
