Pedro Alliana became Paraguay’s president on Friday after senators voted to impeach his predecessor, Santiago Pena, over a major banking crisis.

Alliana, the former vice president, was appointed by senators shortly after Pena’s removal. He pledged to support nearly three million depositors, including pensioners, affected by Ueno Bank’s takeover amid insolvency concerns. An opposition motion to impeach Alliana over the crisis also failed to win congressional approval.
