Former Vice President Pedro Alliana was sworn in as the 53rd President of Paraguay on Friday following the impeachment and removal of former President Santiago Peña. The Chamber of Deputies voted to impeach Peña, and the Senate subsequently voted to remove him from office.
Peña's attempt to resign a day earlier was rejected by Congress. Alliana promised not to abandon the almost three million depositors, including pensioners, affected by Ueno Bank's takeover amid insolvency concerns. The new President is set to serve out the remainder of the presidential term through 2028.
