Weather Report : Rising river levels and low-pressure area

Water levels in several major rivers have risen above their danger marks, prompting authorities to advise residents living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas to take precautionary measures.

According to observations recorded at 6:30 a.m. Myanmar Standard Time on August 8, the water level of the Thanlwin River at Hpa-an had risen about half a foot above its danger level. The river is forecast to rise by a further half a foot over the next 24 hours and may remain above the danger level.

Meanwhile, the Sittaung River at Madauk was recorded at about one foot above its danger level at 6:30 a.m. The water level is expected to fall by around two inches during the next 24 hours, but may continue to remain above the danger level.

The Dokehtawady River at Myitnge was also about half a foot above its danger level at the time of observation. Unlike the Sittaung River, its water level is forecast to rise by about three feet over the next 24 hours, potentially keeping the river well above its danger level.

People living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas in Hpa-an Township, Madauk and Myitnge have been particularly advised to take precautionary measures and remain alert to changes in water levels. In a separate weather development, observations at 2:30 p.m. MST on August 8 indicated that a low-pressure area may form over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Odisha, India.

The development could bring further changes to weather conditions in the region. Residents in areas vulnerable to flooding are advised to closely monitor official weather and river-level updates and follow any instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
