Myitsone Hydropower Project: Project to support energy needs & local development

The Kachin State Government held face-to-face meeting with residents of Shansu and Sitapu wards in Myitkyina Township on August 6.

Jointly organized by the State Information and Public Relations Department and the Kachin State Local Committee for Assistance and Cooperation, the meeting is part of efforts to improve public understanding of the technical aspects of the Ayeyawady Myitsone–Myitnya Hydropower Project.

During the meetings, residents shared their views and concerns about the Myitsone project, including its potential benefits and their rights.

Resident, Lekone Ward said "The meeting helped us better understand the project and cleared up many misunderstandings.  Once the hydropower project is completed, I believe it will improve local livelihoods while also helping meet the energy and development needs of ethnic communities and people across the country."

Resident said "Before this meeting, we did not have enough opportunities to receive clear explanations about the project, so today’s discussion has helped reduce our concerns and improve our understanding. I can now share this information with those who could not attend. I believe electricity is essential for the country’s development and I hope this hydropower project can be implemented soon and bring benefits to the people."

The relevant officials also addressed concerns related to the Myitsone project, including earthquake resilience, dam safety, local employment opportunities, and future development prospects.

Resident said "Since the hydropower project began in 2009, there has been little opportunity for the public to receive clear explanations. I am very pleased that the relevant ministries and officials are now providing detailed information about the project, including its construction. I believe the Myitsone project will create opportunities and bring direct benefits to local people."

The Myitsone project aims to improve the livelihoods of local residents while contributing to the country’s growing electricity needs. Once completed, the Hydropower Project is expected to serve as an important source of energy and development, bringing benefits not only to communities in the project area but also to people across states and regions.
