A seaside resort near Athens threatened by a fierce wildfires

Hundreds of firefighters in Greece on Saturday were battling to save a popular coastal resort northwest of Athens as violent winds lashed the country, hampering operations.

More than 400 firefighters, backed by several dozen specialised aircraft, were battling blazes in the area of Porto Germeno, northwest of Athens. Greece, which was largely spared the major wildfires that hit France and Spain earlier this summer, has placed many regions on high alert.
