Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for a national pact on the climate emergency during a visit to the wildfire zone west of Madrid.

The fires have forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate and highlighted the growing impact of extreme weather. Sánchez said the proposed agreement would strengthen cooperation between the national government and regional authorities in responding to climate-related disasters. The prime minister also stressed the need for policies based on scientific evidence to better prepare for and respond to future climate emergencies.
