Ancient Comoros medinas join UNESCO's heritage list

UNESCO has added six centuries-old medinas in the Comoros to its World Heritage List, recognizing historic sultanate cities that were key centers along Indian Ocean trade routes.The medinas contain palaces, mosques, public squares and narrow streets that remain inhabited today, although many of the historic structures are in poor condition.

The designation places new conservation responsibilities on Comoros while creating opportunities to develop cultural, historical and architectural tourism, preserve heritage sites and promote local craftsmanship through a national preservation strategy.
