Health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo said the death toll from the Ebola outbreak has exceeded 1,000.

They announced the latest infection figures for the country on Wednesday. Cases have been spreading primarily in the northeastern province of Ituri since May.

The officials say 1,033 of 2,536 confirmed cases have been fatal. The World Health Organization said the outbreak has been caused by the Bundibugyo virus. There is reportedly no approved vaccine for it. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on July 16 that the spread of infections has been outpacing a past Ebola outbreak in the DRC.
