The Trump administration has announced that it will slap an additional 50-percent tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods imported by the United States.
It said the action is in response to Canada's discriminatory treatment of American exports such as cars, alcohol and dairy products. The White House said on Monday that Trump signed proclamations to impose the tariffs under Section 338 of the Tariff Act which was passed in 1930.
It will take effect on August 19. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized the tariffs as "the latest in a series of unilateral US trade actions." Carney said Canada is ready to engage with the US to address outstanding trade issues to the mutual benefit of the citizens of both countries.
