Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday announced a new national framework and dedicated Office of AI to regulate technology. New legislation, expected early next year, will enforce mandatory standards for power-hungry AI data centers, govern high-risk AI, and protect creative copyright against unauthorized model training.
The government is pushing for strict legal controls to prevent AI firms from scraping and training on Australian books, art, music, or news without compensating the creators. Moreover, the government is focusing on managing risks associated with chatbots and deepfakes to protect consumers, especially young people, in coordination with the recently launched AI Safety Institute.
