40 schoolchildren and teachers had been seized from three schools in Nigeria's Oyo state and held captive for nearly two months. The pupils’ rescue was announced on Friday. Nigerian security forces suffered "casualties" during the rescue operation, the army said on Saturday.

The joint forces engaged in fierce crossfires with Ansaru militants that put an end to a major security crisis in the country's relatively safe southwest. Following intense pressure from the joint task force, the captors unconditionally released the victims. It was known that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested and several others were neutralized.
