British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the Labour Party can continue to win elections after he leaves office, saying his successor would inherit a strong platform. He made the remarks in an interview with the BBC following his resignation announcement as party leader and prime minister.

He added he was working to ensure “what comes next is a success,” describing his departure as “the end of his journey in politics.” Starmer took over Labour after its 2019 election defeat, which he called the “worst defeat for a Labour party since 1935.” He was elected Labour leader in April 2020 and became prime minister on July 5, 2024, following the party’s general election victory.
