UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday urged international governments to urgently establish shared artificial intelligence rules. Following the release of a report by the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, Guterres warned that the window to write common rules is closing fast and that the longer AI advances without a global framework, the less influence societies will have over its direction.

To harness AI safely, Guterres has outlined four priorities such as maintaining human control over the use of force, creating coherent global regulations, protecting information integrity, and closing the AI capability gap between rich and poor nations.
