The opening ceremony of a basic literacy program for rural and ethnic communities took place in Kengtung on Friday.

Union Minister for Education Dr Chaw Chaw Sein attended the event in her capacity as the Chairperson of Working Committee on Basic Literacy Program For Rural and Ethnic Communities.

The Union Minister emphasized the importance of improving literacy, especially in rural and remote areas, and providing second-chance learning opportunities for people who missed formal education.

The literacy campaign, organized by the Ministry of Education and the Shan State Government, will begin on June 22 across eight townships in eastern Shan State. A total of 888 learners will be taught in 77 literacy classes by 135 volunteer teachers and supervisors.

During the visit, the Union Minister also inspected schools, observed placement tests for out-of-school students, reviewed preparations for relocating the Kengtung Education Degree College, and discussed ways to strengthen higher education, basic education, and teacher training. The Union Minister later donated 5 million kyats to the education community in eastern Shan State.
