An Egyptian-led international team of paleontologists unearthed on Saturday a 62.2-million-year-old marine fossil site in Egypt's Eastern Desert.

Nicknamed a "petrified aquarium," the site contains nearly 500 exceptionally preserved fish fossils, offering critical insights into how marine ecosystems rebounded from the dinosaur extinction.

The fossils belong to the same modern fish lineages that dominate oceans today. This indicates that these fish diversified and took over ocean ecosystems much faster than scientists previously believed.
