Swiss voters have officially rejected a controversial "sustainability initiative" to cap the country's permanent population at 10 million by 2050. Early projections showed about 55% of the electorate opposing the proposal, preventing a measure that could have terminated free movement agreements with the European Union.

Backed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, the initiative argued that mass immigration was straining infrastructure, driving up housing costs, and eating into green space. In the same referendum, voters also appeared to pass a separate bill restricting access to civilian service for military conscientious objectors.
