Crackdown on Online Scams: Efforts to eradicate illegal activities

The government is identifying and deporting foreign nationals who entered Myanmar illegally through border areas and were involved in online gambling, online scams, and other criminal activities.

They are being sent back to their home countries according to legal procedures. In Myawaddy of Kayin State, two foreign nationals, one from the Philippines and one from Russia, were recently detained after entering through illegal routes. Authorities are processing their deportation. From 30 January 2025 to 7 June 2026, a total of 14,703 foreign nationals were detained in Myawaddy Township. Of them, more than 13,000 have already been deported to their countries through Thailand.

The remaining over 1,000 individuals are still under processing. Among them, 662 have been prosecuted under immigration and drug-related laws. The remaining 520 are ready for deportation and are being properly kept. The government is working with neighbouring countries and international organizations to take action against online scam centres and to safely repatriate foreign victims and trafficked persons.
