The Urban Environmental Conservation and Cleansing Department (UECCD) of the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) is carrying out public awareness campaigns on systematic waste disposal under the government’s 100-day plan.
An awareness event was held in North Okkalapa Township on Monday with the participation of Hluttaw representatives, departmental organizations, members of the Maternal and Child Welfare Association, the Myanmar Police Force and the Fire Brigade.
In charge (North Okkalapa Township), UECCD, Kyaw Min Tun said " We are conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public on preventing environmental pollution and practicing systematic waste disposal. This is the second awareness campaign being held in North Okkalapa Township. To help residents learn proper waste separation, trash bins have been placed in public recreational parks and City Mart shopping centers, and during the school season, awareness programs will also be conducted for students."
Under the government’s 100-day plan, road cleaning, water flow improvement and systematic waste management activities are being carried out, while plans are also underway to establish waste-free zones in wards in cooperation with departmental organizations and NGOs.
Pyith Hluttaw Representative (North Okkalapa Tsp), Nay Lin Aung said " Various initiatives are being implemented across different sectors, under the government’s 100-day plan. We also welcome the YCDC’s systematic waste disposal plan and are ready to cooperate in its implementation. If we work together, we can achieve a cleaner city. As the rainy season is approaching, improving water flow is being prioritized. Proper waste management is important, as it helps prevent drainage blockages and supports a cleaner environment, better public health, and the prevention of communicable diseases."
Educational pamphlets and awareness stickers were also distributed to encourage households to reduce waste and practice proper waste disposal methods.
Tin Tin Oo (EC member), Maternal and Child Welfare Association, (North Okkalapa Township) said " We are carrying out drainage cleaning works for the cleanliness and beautification of wards and townships, with the cooperation of YCDC and local residents. To support systematic waste management, the number of trash bins has been increased from two to four types — yellow, green, red and blue. Cooperation between YCDC and local communities is very important in keeping Yangon clean, and we would like to urge residents to actively participate by properly separating waste into wet waste, dry waste, plastic waste and domestic hazardous waste to help maintain a cleaner city."
