Support for Sports: Outstanding athletes honoured for their achievements

A ceremony to honour the athletes who brought pride to the nation was held on Saturday at Wunna Theikdi Stadium (A) in Nay Pyi Taw. The athletes were honored for their achievements in the 8th World Vovinam Championship and the 16th World Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships held in Indonesia in 2025, the 33rd Southeast Asian Games held in Thailand, and the 13th ASEAN Para Games held in Thailand in January 2026.

Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing attended the ceremony and delivered a speech, saying the event was a meaningful occasion to honor those who deserve recognition. He highlighted Myanmar’s achievements in international competitions, and emphasized the importance of focusing on Olympic sports such as athletics and swimming, improving training systems, using sports science, and preparing systematically for the 34th SEA Games and 14th ASEAN Para Games to be held in Malaysia in 2027.

He called on sports federations, coaches, and officials to work together to develop young athletes, improve coaching standards, and raise Myanmar’s sports performance at regional and international levels. This was followed by presentation of honorary awards to the outstanding athletes.

For individual events, gold medalists received 30 million, silver medalists 20 million, and bronze medalists 10 million kyat. In team events, each gold medalist received 10 million, silver medalists 7 million, and bronze medalists 3.5 million kyat. Coaches and management teams were also awarded cash prizes based on the medals won in their respective sports.

Myanmar sports teams won a total of 150 medals, 26 gold, 47 silver, and 77 bronze, at the 8th World Vovinam Championship, the 16th World Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships, the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, and the 13th ASEAN Para Games. During the event, a total of 3.669 billion kyat in cash prizes to outstanding athletes and 28 coaching and management teams.
