The final coordination meeting regarding the draft of amending the Bar Council Act was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw on December 15.
During the meeting, after the Union Minister and the Union Attorney General delivered opening remarks, Union Supreme Court Justice Daw Khin May Yi explained the purpose of amending the Bar Council Act. She stated that the amendment aims to prohibit individuals who have been disbarred from acting as lawyers in court by taking power of attorney from clients, to prevent them from practicing law outside the court while not being allowed to appear as lawyers, and to enable the imposition of effective penalties on case brokers.
In response, Union Minister and Union Attorney General Dr. Thida Oo discussed that when amending and enacting laws, if the Translation Commission has already translated them into the Myanmar language, they should be amended and enacted in the Myanmar language. Only when divergent interpretations arise should the original English-language law be used.
Since the Translation Commission has officially translated the Bar Council Act, the Myanmar language translation itself should be amended. The proposed amendments in the draft law are indeed necessary in practice. Recognizing that this is a law that should be amended and enacted to support the rule of law in the State, the meeting proceeded with final coordination discussions for its enactment, it’s reported.
