Union Minister for Education Dr. Chaw Chaw Sein held an online meeting with rectors, principals, pro-rectors, professors from universities and degree colleges, and regional and state education officers on August 5.
During the meeting, she urged them to promote and facilitate research activities. The Union Minister highlighted the four key areas of higher education development: teaching and learning, training, research, and international cooperation.
Regarding teaching and learning, she stressed that rectors should push professors to adopt effective teaching methods. She also said that universities need to establish and implement clear learning outcomes to successfully achieve their missions and objectives. She expressed her desire to see progress toward an accreditation system and a robust Quality Assurance (QA) system.
The Union Minister drew a comparison, stating that "a university that doesn't do research is like a song without music." She urged everyone to promote research activities in their respective fields of study. She also emphasized that the international relations offices at universities must coordinate and connect to pursue collaborative projects outlined in their Memoranda of Understanding (MoU).
Following this, the rectors and principals of education degree colleges presented their own points of view. Deputy Minister Dr. Zaw Myint then spoke about the importance of supervising and enforcing established standards for data security, chemical safety, and campus security.
Deputy Minister U Nay Myo Hlaing added that measures must be taken to prevent fights among students. He also suggested that schools that were flooded during the monsoon season should be reopened with substituted school days.
The meeting concluded with presentations from directors-general of the departments and rectors on various topics, including the signing of MoUs between universities, collaborations with international partners, the progress of the Quality Assurance system, and the state of research activities. The Union Minister then gave a speech of conclusion.
