US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has visited Panama amid suggestions by US President Donald Trump that his country should take back control of the Panama Canal, a key shipping route.
Rubio met Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino in Panama City on Sunday in his first overseas trip as secretary of state. The waterway was built by the United States and is currently managed and operated by the Panamanian government.
Trump claimed that fees for using the canal are too high. He says his country could demand the return of the canal if it is not treated fairly. The Panamanian government has reacted sharply. The United Nations has also expressed concern.
