International Human Rights Day: SAC Chairman delivered a speech at the event

The 76th International Human Rights Day was observed at Myanmar's International Convention Centre-1 in Nay Pyi Taw on 10th December.

The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the State Administration Council, Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who delivered a speech. The event was also attended by Joint-Secretary of the State Administration Council, General Ye Win Oo, council members, Union-level officials, Union ministers, Nay Pyi Taw Council Chairman, senior military officers, Commander of Nay Pyi Taw, deputy ministers, officials from the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, civil society organizations, invited guests and students.

In his speech, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing emphasized that today, the December 10th, 2024, marks the 76th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Myanmar, having gained independence in January 1948, supported the adoption of the declaration, which had been drafted in 1946 and ratified two years later. He also highlighted that the Myanmar State constitution incorporates the protection of citizens' fundamental rights and responsibilities, in line with the principles of the Universal Declaration.

The Senior General further noted that Myanmar has supported and ratified international human rights treaties and regularly participates in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process, which assesses the human rights situation worldwide. He stressed the need for human rights to be respected and upheld in order for the country to achieve stability, development and progress. He also mentioned that Myanmar is committed to holding free and fair elections to ensure democratic governance, with ongoing improvements in rule of law, security, and governance.

The theme for the 76th International Human Rights Day, as promoted by the UN, is "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now." This signifies the need to create a better future by respecting human rights principles. Following the speech, Chairman of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission U Paw Lwin Sein provided a detailed report on the commission’s activities, and Vice-Chair of the Commission Dr. Nanda Hmun read a message sent by UN Secretary-General. The attendees then watched a video clip commemorating the 76th International Human Rights Day.

The Prime Minister, along with other participants, was presented with a commemorative emblem by Myanmar National Human Rights Commission. The event concluded with a performance of a song of Human Rights Commission by artists from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture. The ceremony also featured an exhibition of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission’s efforts in human rights promotion and education, with a photo display of its activities.
