Relief and Rehabilitation: Contribution for recovery efforts in flood-hit areas

Well-wishers donate cash assistance for relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-hit areas, triggered by the impact of Typhoon Yagi across the country. A cash donation ceremony in Nay Pyi took place on Saturday with the attendance of Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. P

rior to the ceremony, a video clip documenting the rescue operation during the recent flood and relief measures was screened. This was followed by cash donation by the well-wishers, where the officials in turn presented the certificates of honour.

Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing expressed thanks for generous contribution of the donors, and added that it could help great support in implementation the rehabilitation measures. He mentioned that the government has estimated to spend 30 billion kyat for the relief and rehabilitation measures for speedy recovery of the disaster hit areas.

Since efforts are underway for reopening of the schools, he called for donation of books and stationery for the students. He stressed that the donated amount during the ceremony relief the burden of the state to some extent, and expressed his appreciation for the contribution of the individual donors and organizations. Over 32.2 billion kyat cash donation have received from the well-wishers during the ceremony.

It is learnt that the recent flood is the worst disaster in 50 years, causing severe damages triggered by the torrential rainfalls. It has inundated 54 townships in nine regions and states with extensive damages to the various infrastructures.

As of September 21st, over 5,000 buildings were destroyed, more than 136,000 inundated while 546 schools damaged. Over 148,000 people have been affected by the floods that claimed 384 lives and 89 missing. The flood also destroyed 435 religious buildings, 533 roads and bridges, over 2,400 lamp posts and 99 communication towers. It also killed more than 144,000 animals and destroyed the paddy fields of more than 735,000 acres.
