





A workshop on the Development of Myanma Soybean was held at the hall of the Department of Agricultural Research, YaeZin in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation U Min Naung said that the workshop was held with the support of Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund.
Starting form 2024-2025 fiscal year, the project on “Acceleration of crops cultivation by planting soybean after paddy harvesting season” is being implemented with Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund. Efforts have been made in Nay Pyi Taw, Shan State, Kachin State and Ayeyawady Region for boosting production of soybean.
The Union Minister added that plans are underway to cultivate Yaezin-15 soybean species across the country, to boost local oil crop production and reduce the import of edible oil. Then, the researchers, experts, officials from private businesses and farmers made sector-wise discussion.
After the seminar, they visited the Soybean Research Unit of Pulses Research Division under the Department of Agricultural Research. Soybean is mainly cultivated during the rainy season in Shan State and it is also cultivated in Saging, Bago, Magway, Mandalay and Ayeyawady Regions as late monsoon crop.
In Shan, Kachin, Mon and Kayin States, soybean is cultivated after paddy harvesting season. During 2023-2024, a total of 3.4 million acres of soybean were cultivated with the production of 5.8 million tons across the country, resulting to the export of over 6,000 metric ton to the international markets.
