FIFA chief vows reform after Indonesia disaster

FIFA's President Gianni Infantino on Tuesday vowed to reform Indonesia's football conditions and improve stadiums' infrastructure across the soccer-obsessed country, following a tragedy in which at least 132 people, including 43 children, died.

After meeting Indonesia's President Joko Widodo and Infantino said that FIFA will work closely with the government, the Asian Football Confederation and Indonesia's Football Association to make sure the Under-20 FIFA World Cup set to be held in country next year will run smoothly and seamlessly.

At a joint news conference with Widodo, he said the people in Indonesia "love football and we owe it to them that when they go to see a match, they are safe and secure".

The October 1 stampede in the Kanjuruhan soccer stadium in East Java's Malang city was one of the world's deadliest disasters at a sporting event. About 580 spectators were injured, according to the latest government data.
